Need Help on ID
I have a 351m/400 engine that came out of a 83 f150 2wd w/C6 and 9" rear end. Now this is a rebuilt motor in 85 and has not been toughed since. I can't read the numbers on the left rear corner data plate or find the casting numbers. The rebuild tag list this info:
Model# cf493 5406
mains .010
Cyl. bore .060
Rods .010
Rebuild was done at Prairie Remanufacturing Center. Winipeg , Manitoba, Canada
I am new to the V8 335 series engines. I have been a SIX man most of my truck days, and the can no longer supply the power I need. Yes I have exhuasted my 300 six power potential.
94 F150 4x4 4.9l MPI 5spd
3.50 dana 44fr/9"rear
33x12.50-15
many mods
Thanks
Just wondering if I should be keeping this for parts and finding myself a 400 or just continue with the 4.9 six I have.
If anyone can ID this by the info on the rebuild tag I would appreciate it.
Thanks

Rebuilding a 351M/400 as a 351C is not possible. Period. :-X23

Your call. You want a straight 6
or a V8

The mains, rods and overbore numbers are self explanatory. The other numbers are probably unique to the company that rebuilt the engine.
As for this engine I think it will be a parts donor, unless there is not going to be a problem with overheating with being at bore limit. The compression on all cylinders cold is 145psi and above with about a 7 to 8 psi spread. There seems to be bags of life left as the truck it came out of had 170,000KM (102,000miles) total.
Would it be worth building this one up anyway, like do the heads, intake, etc.. and keep a 400 Sblock on hand, as I believe these parts are interchangeable.
Thanks for the help so far

On the rear upper right corner of the block these numbers were stamped
5b5511556 and 01567
On the center of the block next to these numbers a cast CF
On the intake 2bbl D70e9425ca
On the heads only marks on it are L/H 269L R/H 13G both have 3/85
I could not find a casting marks on the right side of the block as it is a little rusty.
Thanks

The good news is that the block was cast at the Cleveland Foundry which is probably why it's still good out to a .060" overbore. You won't have to worry about the cracking in the lifter valley. 5B5511556 is the year the engine was assembled 5 (1975) the assembly plant B (poss Oakville Canada ) and the serial number of the engine. If you look of the machined surface on the lower right front next to the timing cover you'll see the build date code stamped which can tell you what month it was built...something like 5???B.
So it looks like this engine is going on the stand for a tear down and build up.
Thanks for the info guys,
:-)
This will be my project for the next little while, and may be asking a few question here and there.
