hey guys i was wondering if any1 knew the actual sizes of the head studs for a 7.3 i have a buddy in a machine shop that said he might be able to make me a set if i can find the sizes.
if this can be done what material do you suggest is used?
thx
Bottom threads are 1.2" x 13 and the tops are 1/2" USS fine.
Length I don't know off the top of my head, but they are about 1.25" longer than head bolts.
As for what to make them out of, that will be a bit harder to find, tensile strength around 220,000 pounds is what you are looking for.
And most head studs have rolled threads, not cut threads.
I don't know there size but the material can vary. The thing is with making them a person would need a heat treat oven and stove to temper them. That process would depend on what steel a person used. I haven't taken the time to figure out what steel they use on those studs. It isn't a real high carbon steel but the heat treatment is the key.
Oh I forgot something. Some of the guys mentioned rolled threads on the studs. I did some checking into that and actually according to several bolt people, the rolled threads are not stronger. I didn't know so I looked. The guys had me wondering. Anyway the rolled thread deal basicly is part of the process of extruding a bolt from the metal stock and is less labor intensive then cutting the threads.
Do some looking around as see what you find. I learned some interesting things.
