Squealin tensioner

so I's pull my tensioner this evenin and in my hurry i didnt look to see if the spring went INside the base mount or around it....when i tighten the new one down, the spring holds up against the curved upper base part on block, not allowing tensioner to seat...... if i KNEW i could just swap the pulley from new to old TENSIONER , ida done that in a jiffy....so... is there an easy way to align the spring ?? i gave up after dark when i had to hold a flashlightin my teeth....

well....go er figgered out....spring goes on the outside, no room inside..but what a pain ....had to use vise grips and a monkey wrench to align spring, then was cake.
