mower key

I lost the darn key to my craftsman mower. is there a way to start the thing without a key? I'm in the middle of moving to a new place and things are topsy-turvy around here. I thought I would check with you guys before doing something stupid like sticking a screw driver in the key hole and twisting it.

Go down to your local hardware store, Lowes, Home Depot, whatever and pay $3.00 for two new keys.

I think newer tractors have different keys, but in my old lawn tractor, from late 60s early 70s, you could just stick a very small flat head, and it would start up.
