brake problem

Alright on my 87 F-150 the brakes pump up with the truck not running but when i crank it up and hit the brakes the pedal sinks to the floor. What would cause this?

a leaking master cylinder, or a leak in the lines somewhere. most likely the master cylinder though.

Does the pedal sink slowly to the floor, or is just really spongy and low? They are different symptoms with different causes.

Is there a possibility you have air in the lines?

spongy and low i think, but it shouldnt be any air in the lines since the system has been opened for anything

Probably the master cylinder then. If it is air, that will fix it because you have to bleed the whole system out anyway.

You sure your rears are adjusted correctly?

Also, does yours have that stupid RABS valve in it?

Have you checked your fluid level ??

If your fluid level is real low, you can get air in the system when going around turns, or going up and down steep grades.

Did this phenominum happen all at once, or seem to come on over a period of time ??

I would suggest making sure that the rears are adjusted up then bleeding system.

fluid level is fine, it wasnt the greatest pedal feel to start with and then the truck sat at the hunting camper for a couple months and went to get it and it was like this

If it sat for a while, it's 99% of the time a master cylinder.

it could be the master cylinder, or your vaccum advance to help with braking. if you have a vaccum leak then by you depressing the pedal while the truck is off it will pressurize the master cylinder manually. but when the truck is on and you have vaccum you dont really touch the master cylinder. the vaccum does all of this for you. i would suggest to look for a vaccum leak

No, a bad booster or a vacuum problem cannot cause a low or soft pedal. The only thing it can do is cause a hard pedal and make it hard to stop the truck.

Sounds like a master cylinder given the time during use. But the spongy and low break is odd. Usually the pedal will sink slowly to the floor with a bad MC. Also can you pump it and firm up the break with the truck running only for it to start sinking again? That would almost certainly indicate a master cylinder. A reman. one will run you about $40 plus a core. It's an easy, though time consuming fix.

Someone mentioned the RABS Hydraulic Control Valve and you may want to check this. It's located below the MC and and is hooked into the brake lines. At the front of this valve you'll see a large hex plug on the end. Unscrew this, remove the spring inside, and replace the plug. Pump the brake pedal a few times. If the pedal stays up you've diagnosed the problem. The valve has failed in the open position. You can drive it this way, but you won't have ABS. Unit is replaced as a whole and runs about $90 plus a core charge.
