Ford 429 from a 97 F700

About six months ago, I got a 1997 F700 truck. It used to be a propane delivery truck and was of coursed powered via propane also. The dude I bought it from bought the truck from someone else just for the tank mounted on the end. Wound up it was too big for him by a few hundred to thousand gallons for his type of trucks. Anyhow when I purchased it, the tank, meter, etc.. were removed.

Anyhow it had about 175k on the total truck but at some point a rebuilt Jasper is in it with a sticker and all. My question is if I get the details off of the sticker can someone decode it or I can call Jasper and they tell me about it? My real question is whether the 429 is a Joe Blow remanafactured or is it specifically made for propane with higher compression?

Any idea what stock would be from the factory? My guess is the motor has under 80k on it maybe even a third of that possibly. I got the truck which ran for less than scrap for the weight and of course it was a nightmare getting home in which the propane tank gauge was busted. So I had to convert to gasoline the next time I was up there.

The truck is airbraked, 5 speed with a 2 speed rear and it is stuck in LOW. However it seemed as a chassis driving in morning stop and go up to about 45, it got about 7mpg with a tank we stuck on it. The oil pressure was at 80 the whole time, which should mean a sweet and tight motor, eh?

The truck has 2 brand new steers by Goodyear and the dually axle has Firestones at above 90%. The guy I got it from was miffed that I got it for cheaper than what the tires he put on it cost him.

While this info is from the 1993 Medium/Heavy Duty Specification Book, I doubt Ford increased the 429's power ratings from '93-'97 model years. The ratings listed are : 236(net) horsepower@3,600rpm (with automatic), 231@3,500rpm (with manual) and 358 lb.ft. of torque@2,800rpm. Compression ratio listed is 8.0:1. Hope this helps.

The only usable parts (from a performance standpoint) is the block, oil pan and cranksahft.

The 429 commercial truck engine shares very little with the passenger car/light truck 429/460's...basically just the D9TE-AB block. The heads are techincally different, cast iron timing cover, pistons and rods are different, etc.

The full-length pan is nice (but no baffling or windage trays to speak of) but I don't think it will clear anything other than the truck it is in.

Those engines came with forged cranksafts, but they are configured quite differently from the passenger car 429/460 cranks, and by the time you have re-machined one to use you might as well just bought 2-3 offshore forged stroker cranks.

It is a very low hp, low compression engine, probably arond 7.5:1 c/r. The Clark 5-speeds cannot be given away, but when they do break (which is rare) suddenly they are worth their weight in gold.
