Hey ya'll....I'm having problems with my choke on my 351M. I just bought a new Motorcraft 2bbl back in Sept or so and rebuilt the top end on the motor. Ever since I put the carb on the choke seems to want to stick. After the engine is warmed up it'll idle at 1000 rpm and once you stomp on the gas peddal it'll idle back down to 600 where it's supposed to be. Anyone know what is causing this?? It gets quite aggrivating having to punch the gas at the stop light or stop sign to get it to idle down. That and it uses a lot of gas doing this.
1978 F-150 flareside. Primitive by todays standards but she was a jaw dropper back then. :-staun
1ole4d, try some of that spray carb cleaner on the choke linkage. After that, spray it down with WD-40, or something similiar. There is a coil spring that holds the choke plate open. Pay special attention to that. If it gets gummed up, it will cause the choke plate to stick.
Sometimes the choke fast idle cam will be worn, and have an edge built up where the fast idle screw falls off the ramps. I had to do some light file work on mine, to get it to operate smoothly.
The wd40 trick should work. But if it doesn't, loosen the 3 screws on the round black choke cover, and turn it in the direction of "leaner" (marked on the cover) just a little bit, and see if it stops the problem.
Just thought of another cause too. Do you have the metal heat tube hooked up on the exhaust manifold which runs up to the carb/choke housing? This assists the choke in pulling off.
