Turning My Crank (Literally)

I was wondering what is the safe limit for a 400 (or any crank for that matter). I have a 400 crank that is already .020 on the mains and rods and it needs to be turned again. Is it safe to go .030?

The crank will turn just fine. The real deciding factor is what bearings are available.that's generally what determines how far a crank can go. Contact your local engine machine shop who turns cranks and ask them. They'll have the bearing books that list available bearings. I used to grind cranks and that's how we decided.

So the effect on the strength of the crank will be negligable? That is my main concern. I can get bearings .030 under, so that won't be a prob.

Thanks
