strange 4wd issues

strange 4wd issues
Hi all, i just picked up my 94 f-150 xlt reg cab long bed 4x4 today. it is nearly the twin to my 92 that i should have never sold. Ive been looking for a replacement for 3 years since i sold and and i think i finally found it in the new truck (5.0 automatic) despite the odd things it does while in 4wd. So heres the deal. If i pull back the lever from 2wd to 4-high the dash lght comes on that says 4-low. I have checked in snow, the 4wd is working as i was spinning in 2wd, so i tried 4 and came right out. the big issue that befuddles me is that when i take off in what the lever says is 4-high and the dash says is 4-low, the truck seems to shift from 1st gear to overdrive then back to first, then back to overdrive and so on. its like it wants to die, then goes back into 1st. Anyone have any thoughs on where to looks first? thanks alot!

no problems with the transmission itself. Only when the truck is in 4-high are there issues with it shifting from 1st to overdrive, it cant seem to find gears in between. Low range works fine as well.....only 4-high is giving me troubles.
