Degreeing a cam

What is involved in degreeing a cam? Is it real important? Is there much gain in performance?

Thanks
Chad

I would say no. Only the racers looking for the last ounce of hp would gain anything. All they are doing is checking the production tolerances from the factory. You line up the timing marks on the cam sprockets and put it together. But the racer guy says no! He says, what if the guy at the factory got the keyway on the lower sprocket off a little? Or what if they got the pin that aligns the upper sprocket off a little? What if the guy who ground the cam, got the lobe off a little? These little tiny things, which make a difference at race day, are what the are checking when degreeing the cam.

You need a degree wheel, a dial indicator & stand, a piece of coat hanger and the specs for the cam shaft. You can find the instructions on the Comp Cams website.
