I usually post in the Excursion forum but need help with wife's Expy. 2004 5.4, 203,000+ miles. Got this code for the second time today after about an hour to hour and a half drive. Code reader says (Coolant temperature below thermostat regulating temperature). Could I need a new thermostat? Thanks in advance for any help. John

Does it take longer for the engine to heat up when first started? It could be the thermostat or the temperature sensor.

There appears to be no change in how long it takes to heat up.

I had been driving in the mountains for about 1 hour when the ses came on. When I got home I pulled a P0125 - Insuff Cool Temp code. The temperature gauge looked normal but when I hooked up the scan tool and drove around for a couple of days, the engine temperature stayed at 161 - 163 degrees. After replacing the thermostat my crusing temperature stayed at 192 and my gauge rose about 1/16" - 1/8".

Like the man says, change the thermostat
