Your DPFE (egr pressure sensor) is probably bad. Same codes on my 96 Ranger and 96 Bronco. Both were fixed when I replaced their sensors last month. They go bad after time. If the vacume lines are all good, and the EGR valve responds (the vehicle almost dies) when you apply vacume to where the line goes in the top of the EGR valve, then it is likely the sensor. Its the metal or plastic black box near the EGR valve with two hoses going into it. If you replace it make sure you replace those hoses as they disintegrate inside with age and exhaust heat. They are silicone lined hoses. My sensor was packed with a sandy grit inside when I broke the old one apart. My guess is that as the silicone broke down it blew up into the sensor and caused the sensor to send incorrect data to the PCM and eventually failed altogether. My trucks run much better after changing the sensors. No more P0401.
