The alternator on my '88 F-150 with the same engine has an internal voltage regulator. Here is what your problem may be. The electrical connection that plugs into your alternator may not hook on tightly. Some auto parts stores sell a new electrical connector, pigtail of sorts, that they recommend you cut the old connector off and solder the old wires onto that new pigtail connector. This is a very common problem on this vintage F-series trucks.
