I was changing the fanbelts on my 400 engine, and before the trip to the parts store, I noticed it had three belts, one for the A/C, one for the alternator, and one for the power steering. One of them (I think it was the power steering belt, but tis been a while, so i can't be sure), also ran the water pump & fan. So I get the belts and start putting them on, and discover a fourth accessory near the bottom of the engine I'd overlooked, because the fanbelt had broken off. I checked the crank, and sure enough, the pulley had grooves for 4 belts. I have no idea how long I drove around with the fourth belt never noticing it was missing, so I didn't bother to replace it. But I would like to know what that 4th accessory is. I'm thinking it the air pump, but I'm not sure. If not, what is it?
Thanks a lot. I didn't figure it was very important or the engine would have run. Anyway, no air pump can be my revenge at the EPA for making this motor so weak from the factory!
