Ok i've read through a lot of posts about this and i just want to make sure that it will work. from what i understand, you can put any year 351 cleveland heads on any year 351M heads, right? just trying to keep it all straight. thanks, dave
In my eyes, yes. Compressions for 351m's come in at 8.0-1. Any Clevland head will raise that figure somewhat up to 9.2-1(for early quench heads) in my books. Its the intakes you have to worry about. I believe no one makes a intake to mate with 4bbl heads on a 351m. Since 2bbl "M" heads and 2bbl Clevland heads are almost the same(within 2 cc's or so)and the ports are the same, best bet would be a good valve job, maybe installing larger valves, a good angle grind, and an aftermarket alum. 4bbl intake mite be in order.4bbl ports are too big for low end torque in my eyes.

Cleveland 2V heads were made from 70-74 just like the 4V. I don't have any production numbers at my fingertips but I'd say there were probably more 2Vs made than 4Vs. However M heads are all but identical to Cleveland 2Vs so you might as well just find a good set of M heads and rebuild them. They can be machined to take the Cleveland 4V valves as well.
I have heard, from a very good source,
that the early 2V Cleveland heads are,
in fact, different that the later heads
used on the M's and 400's. The later
heads have water jacketing in the
exhaust port that is a lot thinner, so
can't be ported to the extent that the
earlier heads can be...
