Well as some of you have probably already done, it's time to update the ignition in my '79 Bronco with a 400. It's been getting harder and harder to start lately so I'm ready to invest. My question is which is better? I've looked online at MSD, Accel, and Jacobs so far. I've noticed several posts about the MSD 6 but what about other brands?
70's, if ease of starting is a main consideration, I would stay with the Duraspark II (that you already have). It has a spark retard feature upon starting, which eases the starter motor load. My 78 will start when I just touch the key.
Try a good aftermarket coil on it, with a new set of low resistance spark plug wires, along with new plugs, cap and rotor. You will be surprised how quick that bad boy will start up.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-Feb-02 AT 01:23 AM (EST)]That's actually what I want to do, it's my husband who is hard up for a MSD 6 ignition. I guess I will have to sneak to the parts store when he's not looking and get some tune-up stuff. Any aftermarket coils worth getting?
70's, there is a coil made by Jacobs (called a Ford Energy Coil, $35), that will bolt and plug right in where the stock coil comes out. It uses the stock Ford "horseshoe" connector. Using this coil will allow you to open the plug gaps up by .007, to about .050"
Then install a set of "spiral core" plug wires, with a low resistance. You can buy some as low as 50 ohms per inch. This also increases the spark intensity.
These add-ons will give plenty of spark for a street-driven vehicle. If the Hubby is still set on an aftermarket trigger system, then MSD sells an adapter to connect their box to the Duraspark distributor. You can still use all of the above parts, so nothing is lost.
one more suggestion ---look at the DUI-davis unified ignition---hei unit made for fords-----it is supposed to have "everything" in one package and would seem to be very desirable , I had already ordered my msd 6 and dizzy from summit when I found out about the dui , fd :-X11
