carb to intake application?

carb to intake application?
Is the Edelbrock p#2732 Square bore to Spread bore adapter plate necessary for mating the Edelbrock 1405 carb to the Performer 400 intake p#2171??? I know alot of you run this setup..

What you said made sence to me BUT I called Edelbrock with the same Question and they said it needed that adapter plate because of the thin walls on the mouth of the intake. Looking through the Edelbrock catalog I think it is the only Intake that is like that does anybody know why.?..Tech guy at Edelbrock didnt...
