intakes and chips

OK so nobody has information exhaust systems for the 4.2L. How about intakes? I've seen Airforce One, Airaid, and Volant. Which one do you guys like, or are they even worth doing? Also what about these chips. Is the JET chip best? Are there any chips that allow you to run on 87 octane? Are they worth doing?

Well, as to which chip is best, you're going to get dozens of opinions on that. Mine is admittedly biased. A power chip running on 87 octane is an oxy-moron. A great deal of the power comes from tuning for high octane.

The Jet chip, according to their site, requires 91 octane. This is the same minimum as the Diablo and Superchip.

As to worth, only you can be the judge of that. I'm running a Diablo in my 2000 Ranger with great results, I'll never good back to stock turning. I get about 1 mpg more mileage so I'm not doing too bad with fuel costs.

I only have 90 octane available in Albuquerque with it's 5000-7000 feet of elevation. Will the Diablo chip work with 90 octane OK? Are they the ones with the switch to go back to stock if you have to run 87?

About intakes. I noticed my new truck draws air through the fender from presumably, a colder source of air. Should I be getting one of these fancy intakes that draws hot air from the hot engine compartment or stick with the stock setup with a K&N element in there?

What are the thoughts about headers and catback exhausts for the 4.2? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Yes, that's ok. Octane requirements drop with elevation. Our Superchip flip-chip lets you switch between two programs. Few people find the extra cost worth it. It would take a while to break even on the fuel cost savings.

Cold is always better for power than warm.

No experience with them with the 4.2, can't help with that. Do know that headers increase under hood temps, so make sure you wrap them.

If you do get headers READ the manufactures info VERY CAREFULLY about wrapping the headers. My gibson header warranty will be voided if I wrap them. Headers are designed to run a certain way, if you wrap them against manufacturers recommendations not only may you damage them, but the performance may be thrown off as well. I wrapped the set for my 302 Ranger, and while greatly reducing under head temps, it caused the headers to crack in the long run from them becoming too hot. The manufacturer wouldn't refund my money, but did replace them and told me I would be SOL if I wrapped them again.
