Ford 9 Inch Tag help

I'm looking at a 9 inch from a 59 F100. The tag reads either 4EC 301 or 4EC 801 from what the owner can read. I'm assuming 3.01 gear ratio, non locker?

Anybody have other ideas, from what I can find Ford changed these tags quite abit.

That's not a complete tag number. In fact, it makes no sense at all.

There's no ratio of 301 anything.

1957/72 9's. The tag on the rear end should have three letters, a hyphen, then another letter like this: WCC-A / WDM-B

If Limited Slip, there's a separate tag used thru 1966 with an L on it.

1959 F100 9" rear axle ratios: 3.70-1 / 3.89-1 / 4.11-1

Rear end tags: facing the carrier = on one of the carrier bolts at about 5 o'clock...the L tag if present, will be at 4 o'clock.

Another way to ID...look on the trucks Rating Plate inside the glove box door for the AXLE code. Post what code you find.

1959 was the first year Ford offered a Limited slip rear end. Most of them thru 1966 are Spicer 44's, not 9 inchers. Ford called these early Limited Slips an EQUA-LOK.

There is a number in front of the numbers you gave;
3.89 4EC 301
The 3.89 is the ratio, if it's a locker it should look something like 3L.89.
also there is a line above this one with more info.

Ford did not use that L in among the ratio till 1967.

A separate tag if LS is present was used prior to 1967.

See my post above for examples, explanations.

Most LS's of this vintage are Spicer 44's, not 9 inchers.

I would suggest that if the numbers were on the tag as he stated in his post that he might want to follow the information that I gave.

if there's a rear cover plate that's removeable, it's a dana 44. If not, then a 9". If it's a 9", you'll have to pull the center-section out to really know the gear ratio. More work, but more certainty. My .02

What does 4EC 301 or 801 mean? Nothing.

There's no L in the tag number's ratio prior to 1967.

When LS was present, there was a separate tag used..it had an L on it.

Ford only used the WDM, WCC, etc on rear axle tag codes till 1973 on 9's.

Most LS's in F100's were Spicer 44's thru 1966.

The cars used either 8's or 9's when LS is present.

What I typed came from over 35 years of experience reading Ford parts catalogs, and owning over 80 Ford products since 1956.

Perhaps there is some info here you can use. A great Ford rear website with 7 other rear sites at the bottom. Enjoy! www.kevinstang.com/Ninecase.htm

Not rocket science, just turn one axle and see if ths other side turns the same direction. Count how many times the driveshaft turns to one turn of the axle hub to get the gear ratio.

Thanks all for the help. I'll ask the owner if he has the data plate. I haven't seen the rear end all I have is this picture.

Is that a bad thing? Am I better off waiting for a newer one?

I know I want a 57-72 F100 9 inch.

older style to me means before the tapered tube section, like that of the mid and later 70's F150's. Here's a pic, though it's not so obvious. The untapered ones are not in the pic.

Talking 9" rear confusion...

Hey 53...I feel your drama...I've been talkin' to a few dudes that don't know
SQUAT about what they are tryin' to sell!!! VERY frustrating to say the least...

I found a really good web-site that has helped me out though, look here:

http://www.kevinstang.com/Ninecase.htm

Over the past 4-5 days some joker has been runnin' around snappin' up EVERY
nodular 9" rear end assembly before I can go pick it up!!!

Havi, is that a rack for holding weights in a gym?

It's a differential display rack now anyway, I love it!
