I have seen a burr around the inner edge of the housing the spindle housing the hub slides into. What I do when it mysteriously hangs up on a burr (usually from someone heating on the housing) is take my die grinder and remove it. If you don't have a die grinder, you can use a regular ol' file. Just feel for a high spot.

Ok. Thanks for all your help so far.

What kind of tools might i be able to use to get a good hold on it? I know I am strong enough to pull it out, if I had a good hold on it.

There were a couple of burrs that looked like they were holding it up. Right where the ring sits down in a groove on the outside. I cleaned all of those up. It looks like it should just slide rite out. I can see that the path is clear now.

There must be a bent gear inside that is slightly off its path or something. I just cant get a good hold on it.

This is where your own resourcefulness comes in handy. We don't know what tools you have at your disposal, and we don't know where it's getting hung up or if you will be able to force it out.

Is there any way to remove the whole assembly. As in take off the ball joints and tie rod ends?

No, you have to tear it down according to the article you're reading.

If you can attach a slide hammer to a couple of the screws in the locking hub that should get it out. But without seeing it and figuring out exactly what's hanging it up I don't know. You have everything removed that's holding it in place.

There is nothing holding it in place at all.I was thinking of drilling a couple of holes in a piece of wood, then sticking it over the hub and thread the screws through a the holes. Then I could just slide the wood out very hard and bang the hub out.

If there's nothing holding it place then it would slide out.

Your idea would work too. A poor man's slide hammer.

Well it worked. I ended up using a jack handle and just pounded it from behind. It came out, with time. Here are some pictures of my new tool.

Nice job. It just takes a little creativity.

What happened to that locking hub? It looks like someone beat the snot out of it with a 5 lb sledge.

I did. I was very angry. The inner gear was broken anyways. I figured that the inside was just seized up and needed to be freed up. Thanks for all your help. Is 68.88 a good price for a set of Warn Locking hubs?

I'd jump on it. Get the premiums if you have big tires or abuse it a lot. They're a bit more, but worth it.

If you damaged the housing, I would replace that or your new hubs may not last long or even want to sit in there right.

I have an extra one in my garage (I think).

I think that the housing is fine. I have 31X10.5X15 tires. Should I go with premiums?
