Ok so I searched and finally decided that the search engine on this site needs to be retired. It is officially retarded.

Anyway, I have had my new to me SCREW for about a week and a half or two weeks. Day two or three I all of a sudden heard a noise from the engine compartment. Makes the truck sound like a diesel but not as dramatically loud. Just a light mini diesel sound you know?

I hear it mostly at idle. Seems to go away after 1500 rpms or so.

I took my mechanic's stethoscope and poked around.

from the valve covers it sounds like what I would imagine metal rubbing on metal but under water or liquid of some sort (like oil of course)

From the fuel rail it sounds like a gang of spoon players rattling away at a metal pipe.

to the normal ear it sounds like nosiy lifters.
like a ticking . . . from both sides of the engine.

From the cab, like i said, it sounds like a diesel.

I checked the oil with engine off . . . it barely touched the bottom of the dipstick

i freaked OUT so i added about 4 qts of motor cradt 5w20

i started her up and checked again a few times

its a little bit over the hashmarks

noise is still there

could it be that the lack of oil damaged something like the camshaft(s)? and now they are like scored and will always make this sound?

if answer to above question is yes, does this mean I need a rebuild or new camshafts or something or would the engine last fine with this condition?

Well, to answer your questions, not sure if the lack of oil damaged anything, but yes, they will always make this sound. Actually, even if the oil wasn't low, it will still make this sound. There was an issue with the cam phasers on the 04s that would make the knocking sound, especially at idle. You can get new phasers that do help. I had mine done under warranty and the knock was eliminated.

Answer 2- as long as they wasn't any damage, which I'm guessing there isn't, the engine will last as long as it can in this condition. The noise doesn't cause any premature failures.

 

mine is an 05 but I'm guessing the same applies?

man, i'm so lost with this new truck . . . I have always had older trucks, mostly 92-96's and have always been the guy on that part of the board that has all the answers like this lol

what is a cam phaser?

I think its that wheel at the front of the cam that you see when you remove the timing cover.

if so, this should be pretty "simple" to replace right? no?

 

yea sounds like cam phasers but the only problem is that if you get them replaced you will still have that ticking noise, I have done several and they all tick.

changing these is basically one of those "while we're in here, might as well change (in this case, timing chains/guides etc) too" situations right?

 

so changing them will still make them tick? hmm . . . well I guess I don't mind it as long as its not hurting anything.

I added about 4 quarts of motorcraft oil and it actually seems to have quieted the knocking sound i use to hear.

i still hear it but not as loud. the ticking is the same though . . . just as loud (with hood open, not inside cab)

a mechanic i trust said to put something called Rislone to stop the noise(s)
but a couple of guys on here have said not to add anything cause Ford says not to (via manuals etc)

what do you guys think??
