Replaced the glow plugs yesterday and all the rubber connector boots crumbled.
What can be used to either replace the boot or keep the electrical connection
from being damaged by the elements.
What a difference fresh glow plugs made in the truck starting! Before I needed to cycle the glow plugs a few times and turn the motor over a while to get it going. Now it fired up almost as soon as it turned over.Definately money well spent.
I use heat shrink material.......remove all the white plastic then heat shrink the new cover..... always leave a slight amount over the end to cover all metal.
We ran them with out the covers when U-haul had all the 7.3 in the 14 & 17 footers. It's only hot for starting and at 12 volts it doesn't jump, but in case yea do the shrink tubing thing.
I prefer a good 3:1 shrink ratio. Also try to stay away from the shiny texture ones. The best ones have a rubber looking texture to them. They withstand the heat better, last longer without getting brittle and have a higher CAT rating. I prefer the IDEAL brand, or simmilar.
Shrink tubing it is then.I will clean the connectors and heat gun the tubing when the return lines and injectors get changed whenever spring arrives.
Need to redo the oil cooler and get the radiator clean first.having a lift kit makes the truck easier to work under but is a pain when working under the hood.
