Shifting hard and pulsing
I just bought a 96 f250 w/ the 7.5 460. It had been setting more than it was driven in the last few months from what I was told. It shifts hard and sort of bucks out of second. I'm also hearing some mild pinging in the engine while accelerating. Also when I'm driving, it feels like it's jumping or pulsing under acceleration, kind of hard to describe, but it's not accelerating strong like it should without that pulsing, otherwise it's never hesitated to shift like it should, just shifts hard and uneven out of second gear. Almost feels like it's missing. Any suggestions on what I should check? I don't know when or if the plugs/wires were ever changed or the condition of the distributor. I just bought it about 2 weeks ago and I've put about 300 miles on it, with it acting this way. The mileage is terrible on it, but I'm sure that's to be expected. Please help, thanks.

Is the trans an E4OD? It should have an electronic overdrive lockout button if it is. It may need the upgrades, but I believe 1996 had all the internal upgrades already... Anyway, check all connections, vacuum lines, etc, and spark plugs, and a complete tuneup to start with.
