Unhappy Engine woes...

Mainly venting... trying to decide rebuild of swap for a remanufactured...

The plan was to seal up the engine while the cab is off... It was running and not smoking when I drove it home...

new oil pump and gaskets under it, new water pump since it was off, it needed a timing chain so I put a new edelbrock performer cam & lifters in it... I got a complete gasket kit, so off come the heads just to look & re-seal it... and off the springs for new valve seals...

some wear showing a ring land at the top of the cyls... pistons had some side play... already bored .030 over... but the part that sealed the deal for a complete rebuild is 2 valve stem tips chipping off the hardened surface and one valve guide broken a chunk off inside the intake runner and shady fixed with a brass insert that when reamed out when through it on one side because it was in crooked because of the broken out side...

With a rebuild kit through summit costing appox $300, then the block needing cleaned, bored, cam bearings $?$?$, replace one cyl head, new valves & maybe guides??? It might be better to just get a reman long block...

I thought about going to a 460 since a buddy has a one with a C6 out of a motorhome that caught fire... But it needs rebuilt also since it was oil burner... And I already have the new edelbrock performer cam, timing chain, intake & carb for the 400...

This sets my budget build way back & out of budget...

It's really up to you and depends on how much money you want to spend, you'll get a better engine taking your to a machine shop and tell them what you want than by ordering one already built. Not that they're a bad engine.
If I had the bucks I would go with rebuilding mine.

I would find a good used cheap complete motor before I would dump 2K into a fresh motor. I can find used 400s for free to $300

That's what I have now... I drove this truck home when I bought it, the prior owner still had it registered/tagged... they bought a bigger truck to replace this one... no problems, no smoke, dripped oil is all...

So, I gamble again, get another "good used" engine, open it up for new gaskets, install the edelbrock cam & intake... Just maybe find a worse engine??? Makes sence to me...

I bring a bell housing, a battery, a compression tester, and a starter. If they wont let me hook up all four things, and spin it, I walk.
