Cuz we just hit it out here a couple days ago. Granted it's at the highest priced retailers (Chevron) and I don't pump from them since they are a low volume supplier..........probably due to their prices. I usually go to the truck stops just up north from me but even they are around $3.75/gal. I know the oil companies are trying to capitalize on an ever growing diesel market but my lord, how much higher can it go before they start driving consumers out? I just sold my '85 460........now I'm starting to think I should have kept it around as it may not be long before it would have been the more economical of my trucks and I never would have imagined that. For reference, 87 octane is going for around $3.40/gal here. I'm having visions of a future where home bio labs are busted like meth labs. I know a couple of local guys have had they're equipment confiscated for not having the correct permits or something of the sort. No more cooking up "moonshine" diesel for them I suppose. For now, I think the first upgrade I would suggest for any diesel owner is a good set of locking fuel caps!
That's terrible Pete. I really do feel for all of you guys up north. With the diminishing value of the American dollar it may not be long before the gap in price isn't that large.
Ok, I am somewhat ignerant on what is going on with the fuel componies. I need a very detailed update just to start to understand what is going on!!! From what I have heard, Some oil companies are reporting record profits and just pouring in the cash. Does anyone actually know who controls the price of fuel or is that something that is hidden from the general public. How much tax are we paying for a gallon of diesel. I can definatly see how making your own diesel could get you busted if your not paying taxes on what you use. Does anyone know how much a flat fee fuel tax sticker is. We use them at UPS on our CNG (compressed natural gas) trucks. The fuel we get is not taxed so ups pays this tax and puts a Red sticker on the windshield that says flat fee tax (or something real close to that). Also, how much different are the taxes in canada than the us? Anyone have any info on this?
Fuel tax stickers, from my dealings with them in my trucking days are a major headache.
But those were used for a slightly different purpose.
Say for instance it is 309 miles across Iowa on I 80 if I remember right.
Average MPG was 5 MPG.
So 309/5= 61.8 gallons of fuel I had to buy in Iowa so they got their fair share of highway use tax for every time I crossed the state from one side to the other.
If in reality, I only bought 50 gallons, I still owed Iowa 11.8 gallons worth of fuel tax.
However if I bought 70 gallons, Iowa owed me the fuel tax on 8.2 gallons of fuel.
Same was to be said for every state you crossed.
To make it even worse, toll road mileage had to be kept seperate from non toll mileage in each state, highway use tax did not apply to toll road miles since you were paying for the highway through the tolls.
Now on top of all that, the state portion of the highway use tax is different for every state.
Book keeping nightmare.
An outfit like UPS has an entire department that does nothing but keep track of mileages and highway use tax paid or owed in each state.
Private vehicles are not required to keep such records and file reports like a commercial operation like UPS has to, yet.
Over where my I am from originally, a lot of people work in, buy groceries, shop and buy fuel in Virginia, but live in West Virginia.
There has been noise several times at some sort of method to share tax dollars.
Virginia says those pesky WV people come here to make money and pay no income tax here because thay all file non resident tax forms and get all the state tax back from Virginia.
WV comes right back with well they are spending money there for groceries, shopping and fuel, so Va. is getting all the sales tax and highway use tax for products consumed in WV.
Same thing goes on any place where there is a big difference in prices from one side of the line to the other.
