Unhappy 86 302 timing question

I must be really old school. Harmonic Balancers used to have degree markings on them.

I have a '86 302 EFI that needs timing. Unhooked the SPOUT connector, read 10* BTDC on Radiator support, hooked up timing light. Went to clean the balancer and there is only one wide groove Cut in it. I can't not see any timing tick marks.

The pointer mounted on the timing cover has a straight edge with a point on the top (to the drivers side direction), and it has a round circle towards the bottom (passenger side).

I am thinking that I just line the wide groove on the balancer up with the straight edge on the pointer? Or is the circle used for something?

Does ant body realy know?

Thanks Shawn

I think you need to scrub the balancer really good. The marks are supposed to be on the balancer for that engine.

Franklin,
Thanks for the reply. I will get to it this evening. It is true, I didn't clean it very well. I kinda gave up when I found that the wide cut line.

Yep it was on there. I saw the thick wide mark first. It was on the other side of the Balancer.

Thanks for the encouragement.

I Set the timing with the engine off. When I started it, to check it running, the mark was right there, 10 btdc. Man, do I like doing it that way. It fires right up. It's the only way to do initials starts on new engines. (not that this is one)

I rotated the balancer clockwise to 10 btdc. Looked under the cap to ensure it was on the compression stroke - pointing to #1. As the rotor turns counter clockwise, I turned the distributor clockwise with the key & timing light on. I locked down the distributor where the light triggered. Runs great

Thanks Again
