Any one know of any nos head gaskets for sale for 292.
Also has anyone tried composite gaskets with stock pistons and deck height. I have heard of detonation problems with the thicker gaskets which seems backwards to me but have read that there is something to do with quench and how far pistons are in the hole at tdc. Its all confusing to me . Any help appreciated.
I have a set of steel NOS gaskets that I can part with. Y's would have had an original quench in the neighborhood of .043 in. With composite gaskets that figure grows to .063, and the run of the mill replacement piston adds another .020 in. Each step takes the compression down, and creates other problems llike with mixing, incomplete combustion, detonation, and so on.
The steel gaskets have fallen out of favor with the Y owners, though I do not see why, especially on a low compression motor. I talked to my mechanic with 40 plus years experience and he wouldnt hesitate using the steelies. Spray both sides with Copper Coat before installation, and retorque head bolts after several good heat cycles. While the head is off have it surfaced if not done recently, to assure flatness, and give deck a good looking at for imperfections.
Thats great I would definitely like to buy them off you.I only need one but will buy the set if need be. I did just buy 4 off of ebay but when I got them on friday I realized they didnt have the two small cooling holes between the center two pistons and they don't have the square front corner which is how I realized someone put mine on backwards. I think possibly they might be off earlier y block 239? I don't seem to be able to e-mail you possibly because I'm new to the forum? How can I get in touch.

There are two types for 272/292's.
C3TZ-6051-D = Steel / .021" thick
C3TZ-6051-G = Composition (Steel & Asbestos)
FTE sponsor GREENSALES has both types - NOS.

Thanks guys the first one's I ordered were from green sales. I asked for the thin steel one but they sent me the composite ones. I didn't however know the part numbers. They do show three in stock you have to leave out dashes and gaps. Still don't know if they will be the same as my 1176bs gaskets with the extra cooling holes between the two middle cylinders. I'll give them a call.
Thanks for all the help and great info. I finally found the right gasket at greensales with the extra coolant holes. I also learned alot about heads and gaskets. The c3tz-6051-d are the same as my 1176bs. I have some extra 7666 felpro gaskets which are also embossed steel( .021") that will fit older y blocks up to 1960 I believe without the coolant holes in between center cylinders if anyone else is looking. Seems like there are at least three or four part numbers for these but there not all exactly the same.
