Can not get my fuel filter opened. I've done the job several times before I know it should not be this tight. I'm trying to figure who the idiot is who tightened it so much (myself or the dealer).
When I had the HPOP repaired, would they have had to remove the fuel filter?
No I haven't. I've actually never used the drain valve. The truck has 96K on it and what I have been doing is replacing the filter every 10K. I unscrew the top remove the filter, use a Turkey baster t suck out all the old fuel from the bowl. Fill the bowl with diesel kleen, and install the filter.
I know that I have a hard time with my Napa replacement cap, and have striped the square on top a bit, but I have a spare in the truck.
If the drain does not work I would have to say just go for it. But have a new cap or be ready to go to the parts store.
I have read a post , not here but on some WVO web site, about a guy that machined his own fuel bowl cap out of aluminium to fill the void in the bowl and lower his purge times. It looked great. Might be a market for an aluminium top for the fuel bowls..........
if you look under the truck pasanger side of the oil pan..just in front of the cross member..you will see a steel tube dead end right where the pan meets the block..i put a rubber line on mine so it could be dumped into a catch pan..
try to use a strap wrench to get your cover off..ever since i had my truck..my cover comes off and goes on by hand...
Since I've never opened the drain. Where is the fuel going to drain to?
If you open the drain, it will drain out under the truck. You will want to use a large drain pan as the drain hose is very short and the fuel stream will hit everything on the way to the ground. I drain mine every 5k or so to make sure there is no water in the bowl.
Your way works too, but if you have just turned off the truck, I would not want to open the lid to the fuel bowl without opening the drain.
I tried a band oil filter wrench and one of these self adjusting oil filter wrenches with 3 legs. I can not believe how stuck on this thing is. I'll try the drain valve tomorrow.
I dont know for sure. But it seems to me in order to get to the HPOP you have to go through the fuel bowl.So it stands to reason the dealer may have overtightened the cover.
if someone puts the o-ring seal on wrong, they are harder to get off, i do believe. i did this once
anybodys truck i am taking the fuel bowl cap off of and its good and stuck, i just get on top of the engine bay in a comfortbale position and use both hands, one on each side of the cap, and put a slight (read:slight) pressure on the cap as im turning it.
oh and just to make sure, you are turning it left arent you. tighty rightly, lefty loosey J/K J/K
