Drove to work Friday morning, all was well with my 390 (rebuilt) until I pulled in to park, and noticed a ticking/tap, shut her down, checked my oil, dipstick showed about a quart low...woops. Added oil, checked it, fired her up and the noise was gone. I'm really hoping this was just due to being a bit low, and not quieting the engine down entirely, hopefully I didn't screw anything over in there?
How many qt's did you put in it to start with ? If it was 5 with a standard oil pan for a 4x2 then I'd be looking for a leak or smoke one ??
Yeah, its the standard oil pan, 4x2 F-100. Its the first oil its had in since the engine was put in, it was a rebuilt '66 390 with 22,000mi on it, its got all new seals and everything so I found this a little odd too, going to check for leaks here in a bit, but I'm just hoping that didn't screw anything up.
Ok lemme ask how long after shut down before you checked the oil ? I'd check it for a qt high at this point IMO
Probably a good 30 minutes or so, possibly 45. I just parked it in the shop to let it cool off and then investigate, and thats when I noticed it was a QT low.
I have a 390 in my 75 250 and my also makes a slight ticking noise. Sometimes it is louder when you start it up. I figured out it was one of my lifters not pumping correctly. My oil level is always good. It has been doing this for a little while so I am not too worried especially since you can't here it well.

Ah...hmm, mine was a ticking/tapping, and the engine has always been perfect, paid $1500 for a pro installation so it was all right, jf anything were to actually go wrong I'm sure I'd be okay on getting it fixed reasonably. I normally check my oil once a week, but that Friday morning was a suprise, I know I need to get around changing it anyway, which I'm planning on doing before the end of the week, I've just been busy. It sounds like it did before after that quart was added, I guess I just wasn't fully aware that little of a drop in oil could cause a tick/tap. I think I'm just paranoid now...but its been quiet, had all the power it should, and seems fine. Just me being worried...don't want anything to happen to a great truck.
