my 02 f250 7.3, has a unusual noise. when your driving about 25mph you here a vibrating type noise, not a grind, but a hollow type noise. you let off the gas and the engine drops to idle, the noise goes away. as you come to a stop you here it again. the noise never changes pitch with the engine rpm's. just constant no matter what you try. maybe, carrier, rear, tranny, drive line?? front end is tight and wheels have no play.
maybe, it has 147,000 miles. has a 6in' lift setting on 37's. truck was lifted 3 weeks after I bought it new back in 02', and has had no problems till the noise thing. Its getting old. but should run another 150,000+. body/interior is showroom clean inside and out. get alot of complements on it. my 85' f250 had 414,000 on it, my 97' had 360,000 on it.
You say you checked the front wheel bearing assemblies. Did you do that after you removed the brake calipers? Could have just enough bind with the calipers to seem tight.
What about the needle bearing on the inside of your front wheel bearing assembly?
tight was in reference that the wheels/hubs had no play up or down or side to side. The locking hubs are new.front brakes had a slight grab on the rotor about 180 degrees. but rolled pretty free. but I do feel when I turn the sterring wheel side to side, we get a pulse pressure in the brake peddle. you can feel the brake peddle moving a bit when you turn the sterring wheel. the steering is loose, because the steering wheel will drift from 12' oclock to 2'oclock at will, without the wheels following.
I have a 2005 SRW 4wd F350 and I think I am experiencing the same noise and issue. In my case I don't get the noise below 30mph but above 30mp the noise is consistence.
I have checked the front end and everything is tight. But when I use a prybar and pry the axle I see alot of movement. This is my first truck so I am not sure if that is normal or not. Anyone know?
My first thought was the bearings. My last question, if it turns out to be the bearing, does the whole entire hub assembly needs to be replaced?

Could be the needle bearing on the knuckle - where the axle stub goes into the wheel bearing assy.

Yes - these are units bearings on 4wd trucks.
Strange it would be the wheel bearing assembly already, but it could. How many miles?
Lock the front hubs (without putting the truck in 4 wheel drive) and drive the truck for a few days. If the noise does not occur, it's the needle bearings in the hubs causing the problem.

88k miles on it, it is a plow truck. I have driven the the truck with both the hub locked and unlocked so several of days; either scenario the noise is still there. I have also lifted up the truck and check to see if the hub is locking or not and it seems to work perfectly fine.
I guess I will have to check the needle bearings now. Hopefully, it hasn't gotten bad to the point where it has eaten the shaft.

Don't the needle bearing rotate regardless of whether the hub is locked or not?
