What Transmission
My truck is a 1985 f250 with a 6.9. When I went to get parts for it they asked if it was the c6 or the AOD. Heres the vin if that helps..

Looking on the identification label on the driver's side door jamb will give codes as to what was installed as it came out of the factory, the VIN doesn't contain such information. Maybe somebody will be able to tell you how to ID the tranny by looking at it (number of bolts holding on the pan, for example) but I certainly don't know enuff about auto trannys to do that.

1985 6.9 = C6 / No AOD's were ever installed in diesels (thank you lucky stars!)
1985/88 = C6's / 1989 and later = E4OD.
FYI
The trans code was never in a Ford's VIN.
Look on your Certification Label for the TRANS code. C6 = K.
C6 = 17 transmission pan bolt holes.
