I have a 1979 f-250 camper special that is going to be a shop truck with a flatbed and I am in the process of doing the body work, I had it in the shop to prime some panels and when I tried to start it the next day, it started and then died, tried to start it again and it was maing a funny sound as if the starter was spinning but not turning the motor.
Well, must be the starter, the bendix not engaging right? Swapped in a new starter and same problem! but we did notice the engine is turning over. So we move on, the carb seemed to be spitting some fuel and smelled flooded, so my friend took the carb off and tossed a rebuild kit in to it, the truck then actually started and ran fine for about 30 seconds, then it died and goes back to the strange sound. It basically sounds like the engine is spinning freely, the motor is turning over and the rotor spins in the distributor, and there is spark from the coil to the distributor.
Our latest theory is something wrong with the timing chain, cam or something to do with the timing.
Check the compression and the spark plugs that could be your problem.

I guess it's possible your cam broke, but I would bet your timing gear/gears stripped, or it seriously jumped time. Pull off your timing cover and check it out
Oh yeh, had the same thing happen to my 400, except when it finally started for the last time it ran long enough to get me home which was about 35 miles, makeing funny noises (well, maybe funny isn't the right word here) the whole time. The timing jumped about 75 degrees. The timing chain was barely touching the crank gear. You may want to check your pistons and valves to, All of the intake valves left inpression on the pistons and bent the pushrods. The motor had over 265,000 miles on it and was used hard. The timing set had 180,000 on it. I'm in the process of rebuilding it now. Good luck. Mike B.
Thanks for the input guys, turned out to be the cam gear, about 75% of the material on the teeth was worn away, luckily no other damage, so it is back on the road. With 168,000 miles it was the original chain and gears, it had an aluminum cam gear, now it has steel, although I thought it would be that nylon or plastic type material like I read about.
