1983 F100 overdrive

1983 F100 overdrive
I own a 83 F100 With a 300 I6 overdrive auto combination.
I usually drive in OD, but sometime if there is to much headwind I use D.
My problem is that it seems that the motor is overreving if I have it in D.
I have a weird (to me) transmission R-N-O-D-1
I feel like I have been jipped a gear. My overdrive is about right, but my drive feels like the second gear of a regular three speed auto.
Anybody familiar with this tranny?
