So after the 300 power motor I had blew, I bought this 240 from a guy and stuck it in the truck thinking I could run it that way temporarily. So far it's been less than ideal. It runs smooth as silk at idle, but when I go to put it in gear and feather the clutch, it backfires out of the carb and dosen't go ANYWHERE. It is the most gutless machine that I've ever driven. Can't pull hills of any grade (even grades that you would think aren't hills at all or even notice normally). Here's the setup. Carb is a 650 Edelbrock, the timing is 8 degrees advanced, though I've tried 12 and 14 degrees advanced with the same outcome. I'm thinking that I'm running too much carb, but would that really do all this? I've tracked down every vacuum leak I can find (used starting fluid and everything). Just wanting your opinion. Seems like a tuning issue to me, but at this point I'm out of ideas. Thanks in advance.
Still sounds like a timing or advance issue. The carb is more than big enough but since most running is done on the primaries that shouldn't really be a problem unless the air flap is opening way too soon and the secondaries are coming into play. Probably wouldn't hurt to have a bit less carb on it though. Check the Edelbrock Tech Section on their web site for tuning and set up instructions.
could easily be that. I've got another cam I can swap in, but it's from my old 300. Seems like more work than it's worth. It runs better over 1600 RPM, and it also has a slight lope at idle.
