When you guys have did your frame off restorations, what did you do with the leaf springs if you got new ones. I undercoated mine, but not really sure if that was a good decision. just wondering what everyone else did. i was 16 when i attempted this frame off so i didn't really know what i was doing. I also got the entire frame down to bare metal but then put 2 coats of prime, 2 coats of rattle can and then 3 coats of 3m professional undercoating. Probably another bad decision lol. Just again what other people would have done or have done
Undercoating your leaf springs won't hurt them, it is just how you want to make them look. As for undercoating there is lots of choices of products. Sounds like you did a good job of preparing the frame so it should stick good, its always good to follow instructions on the product you are using. I am not sure you had to go down to the bare metal but it should be fine.
I got my truck new in 1979 and had it under coated. Now the stuff is dryed up like a mudd puddle after a rain. Left all kinds of places for rust to start. I had it tuff coated. The body has held up very well but the frame is another story. The front frame is great, but the back is chipping off layer by layer. I mean big chunks about 1/32 inch thick. Only in the very back by the last cross member. So I don't really know how to advise you. But it sounds like you did the right thing.
yeah, i took even the inner fenders down to bare metal lol, i just undercoated them though. i have a feeling its all gonna flake off once it hits the road though lol. its been sitting in the garage for about 4 years lol but yeah
I plan on coating the under side of my CC and frame with spray-on bed liner. I doubt I'll do anything to the springs themselves. I don't see how you could hurt them by coating them.
