I am dumbfounded about this so maybe you guys can help. Every time I start my truck it takes two attempts. The first try it feels like the battery is dying. The starter does not turn fast enough for the motor to start. On the second try the starter starts out slow and then spins up quickly. It starts every time on the second try. It does not matter if it has been running for 2 hours or if it is first start of the morning. The temp ahs little effect either. I replaced the batteries, the alternator is only 6 months old, and the starter is about a year old. I was hoping someone else had this experience before I go replacing the starter again. I cant think of any thing else it could be.
Did you clean the battery terminals and starter connections?
Sometimes a hard almost plastic like coating can cover the contact surfaces of the terminals. This has to be scrubbed to shiney metal.
Make sure the battery terminals are clean. Also check the inside surface of the battery cables. A lot of times this is where the plasticy stuff hides out since it looks OK until you realize that it is not shiney metal. Clean the starter solenoid terminals and the starter terminals.
Sometimes this is all it takes to wake up a "dead" battery.
Also check to make sure the charging system and batteries are working right. I have had more than a couple alternators that were dead out of the box or weak after a short time. And once in awhile batteries will also be dead out of the box.
just to let everyone know, it was the starter dying on me. I went with the powermaster starter and the thing starts up like it was brand new. I will keep you updated on the life of the powermaster starter. It starts my truck faster than my car. It is huge and a pain to put in due to the fact the bolts are very hard to get to with the size.
