odd question about 400

You have the stuff there I suppose, so you can probably tell pretty quickly if it will work or not. Also, you need to check older junkyards out in the country that have lots of room, and require you to walk in and get the parts yourself. There should be plenty of 351m and 400's in the junkyards. Look under the hood of old LTD's and such.

odd question about 400

I am doing the same thing with my 89 but I am replacing a 302. Did your truck have air conditioning? I am wondering if I can hook up the compressor to the 400 or get a new compressor?

odd question about 400

Just a suggestion-

Whenever you do an engine conversion, (300-6 to 400, or 400 to 460, whatever) it is best to find a donor vehicle as much like yours as possible with the right motor in order to obtain all of those little brackets and pieces. Even if that motor does not run. You can usually pick up a whole vehicle that is smashed up or not running for very few $$. It also lets you compare stuff side to side. You won't be running to the salvage yard for every little piece, or fabricating, or making do with some cobble job. It will save you $$ in gas, time, and also junkyard prices! Watch for one with a good radiator tho, you may need it

over!

odd question about 400

no i didnt have air conditioning on my 6 or in my 8 i found a place where i could buy all the pullys that was the only thing that was holding me back. I think i will have to find an old power stearing pump becayse im really not sure if the one i got will work time will tell because we are getting down to crunch time im just waiting on getting my C6 rebuilt and thats gonna cost some serious cash flow after that is rebuilt i hsould be all set to drop it in i say that now but you know as well as I there will be a little snag somewhere cause this isnt as easy as i thought

odd question about 400

You can buy a video on how to rebuild the C-6 and save a bundle. The videos are good quality and don't leave anything out, in fact they show how to improve your transmission. It's not as hard as it seems, just take your VCR to where your re-build will be done, so you don't have to go back and forth. I highly recommend this, you'll find that transmission re-building is easier than a lot of other tasks you've done.

Rocky, didn't I just see you in another forum? Ditto the transmission tape. You can get a good one on eBay by Badshoe productions for about $25. I have the tape and it is excellent! One thing that could be stressed more in the tape is absolute cleanliness. Keep the work area and parts as free of particles of any sort as you can, even rag lint. Any particle can find it's way back into the valve body and cause problems.

Use a transmission line filter or even a remote mount oil filter assy with a Purolator filter on it. Change the "little" line filter after a month, and then annually after that. Change the Purolator remote mount every other year. Use the Purolator for the very fine particles it will filter out compared to other brands, trust me on this :-) You can also get hydraulic oil filter$ from a hydraulic parts distributor.

The little WIX #58964 line filters run about $16 each and can be used on power steering return lines also. The remote mount will be cheaper in the long run. The remote mount also adds some cooling capacity!

Don't forget to epoxy a couple of magnets in the tranny pan also.

Get a magnetic drain plug for your engine!

odd question about 400

Ok I have a Buddie that rebuilds tranny for a living, and I've been down to his shop shooting the local bull from time to time. And if you never looked inside a auto tranny there lots of little pieces that if fall out you'll never know where they came from.
IN the valve body alone there's 11 little ***** that control fluid flow, Loose one of them and the tranny's junk.
Talk about Kevlar clutches , that's racing stuff not intended for the street.

Here's something to think about, Just because it made for RACING dosn't make it Great for the street.
Something's that are made for racing are on the ragged edge and not intended for street use.

Racing Trannies are made to go fast, But how long does it take to run the 1/4 mile. 15 sec. if you have a slug, 10 to 9 sec. for a respectable street car.

How long does it take to drive from your home to the Drag strip??

odd question about 400

Awwwww, C'mon guys, if I can do it anyone can do it. After cleaning, we tacked a white bedsheet down on a picnic table, and tacked molding all the way around the tabletop to catch any small parts that may try to escape. The videos are truly excellent, but be sure to use a tv and VCR that can be put right where you're doing the job. We also used a new torque converter, and the truck turned out better than we expected. I'd do it again in a heartbeat, the big transmission boogey-man is gone.

odd question about 400

I should have made it clear I was agreeing about the racing stuff.

I have one of those tapes and have just purchased a rebuild kit with a new band, bushings, and modulator for a C6. I have a large heavy metal shelf with a large bent lip all around on the bottom side. I intend to use the shelf upside down with 3 welded corners on top of a piece of 3/4 plywood held up by sawhorses. The 4th corner will drain into a 5 gallon bucket with a piece of window screen and rag dished in over the top to catch any small part. I also have a tranny shop down the street with an old guy that I know that will answer questions If I need it. I also have a Haynes Ford tranny manual and a big Motors transmission book.

A basic rebuild kit costs $60 on ebay, $100 at a parts store, and if you need any other hard parts they can be had. Check at a good parts store for a reman torque converter (don't re-use your old one), or get a modified unit if you have a engine application that requires it.
