I will be getting my engine back from the machine shop in about a week and I will need a new torque converter. I have a 400M new high comp. pistons, 351 4v open chamber heads, edelbrock cam, edelbrock intake, headers.............. Ok well I'm not sure what torque converter to get. This car will be a weekend driver so I will not be worried about gas milage. I want something fast. Thanks
I would go with the B&M Holeshot 2400 $290 (part #40422) through northernautoparts.com
This converter has a stall of 2300-2500 RPM. Or if you want an almost unstreetable converter that will be a neck snapping kick in the pants, go with the Holeshot 3000 $400 with a stall of 2800-3200 RPM!
79 F150 4x4 410m Built Ford Tough!(9.1:1,KB pistons,custom Comp Cams X-Treme 210/218-.508/.524,roller rockers)/c6/3.5:1 gears,4.11:1 soon, Demon 4bbl, 285/75R16 BFG Mudders on alumn. mags with New Drk. Blue paint.
65 Ranchero 170-6, 3on the tree, solid mags, New Bright Yellow paint
with the 4v heads, basically you want the highest stall that you can bear to live with. I'd suggest AT LEAST 3000rpm if you want it to be quick off the line. Just make sure you've got some fat tyres on the back for grip!
Ok so you say at least 3000 rpm....how high could I go and still be streetable?? Im going to have a slight traction problem until i get some new tires. I have 215/50/14 tires haha
What gear ratio do you have in your rear end? Unless you have 4.11's or higher numerical ratio gears, then your converter will be slipping all the time in high gear with a 3000 rpm stall. You need to figure what your most common engine rpm is going to be at cruise speed. If your rpm at cruise is slower then your stall, the converter will have high slippage, and create much heat.
