Dash Pad remedy?

I have a 78 f150, the dash is expensive and cracked. I was wondering what i could do to maybe get by with the original. I'm not interested in carpet or really a cover.

Where the dash is split it is also raised, i was thinking maybe i could sand or cut away the raised areas, fill in the crack with something, sand it all back smooth and then fiberglass and paint... What do you think? Is it possible to do something like this?

Do a search on vinyl repair kits on the Internet and you will find all sorts of kits designed to repair vinyl damage.

I'm sorry to be a nay sayer, and it is very possible that what I say does not apply to your dash pad.

If it is cracked, then the vinyl is probably badly dried out. I would think that the vinyl repair systems are not a good choice for badly dried out vinyl. Mine is in the same shape. My problem is that the Dark Brown one like mine was only one year and I can't get a repro. My only alternative is to get a black one and dye it, or find a used one which is not going anywhere.

If you have a color that is available in repro, you might put that part of your project on the back burner since it can be done at any time. If your project is going as slow as mine, you could put a nickel in a jar everyday and by the time the truck is finished you will have enough to buy the dash pad. I hope yours is not going that slow, but mine is.
