For my old 1972 ford I need to hook up the horn again. I experimented with a Harbor Frieght special but as soon as the horn worked it sounded stupid and then I realized I need to hook the old horn up to the starter button that I just installed in the dashboard(Buyer beware of the three trumpet harbor freight cheapie air horn). So I was pondering the subject and realized that I could connect the button to the old wiring (don't know which wires) and therefore have the horn working. My main question is can someone point me in the right direction for a wiring diagram to try to find which wires I need to hook up to my new starter button. The reason why I switched to a button was 5 years ago we replaced ther shift column cup because the innards broke out of it. When everything was put back together the horn piece was the only one not working. Plus when they took the steering wheel off they broke the horn bar and it is a pain trying to find another horn bar to replace it oh yeah and the expense to replace it. So I think if I got a wiring diagram I think I could rig up the old one and have this truck be all original again I hope. Everything else is there for the horn just didn't have the horn bar. Thanks
Hey man I can't private send you and email but I will put it here for you it is 1972fordf-100@live.com. This is greatly appreciated and hopefully my horn will work now.
The original steering wheels have a horn ring on the backside. There is a spring loaded copper horn brush that drops into the turn signal switch. It does the same thing the brushes do in an electric motor. Then there's a black wire with a V-shaped clip on the end on the horn pad that shoves into one of the threaded bolt holes in the steering that are used to screw in a steering wheel removal tool. That's all how it hooks up at the wheel.
On the other end one of the wires coming out of the turn signal switch harness is part of what plugs into the trucks's under dash harness. I have it all written down if you need help but that wiring diagram should help you.
