Post 400 starting amp draw

I have just built a 400 with ~9.5:1 compression (flat top pistons & std 2V heads). The engine has less than 250 miles on it. The starter has been bench tested @ >100amps, when running. I have been shown that a new starter pulls the same amps. I have all new electrical stuff (100amp alt, voltage reg, ground & positive cables, etc). Now the amp draw when starting the engine is ~450 amps. Is this amp draw excessive or not?? By the way the weather is nice and warm when starting.

Can anyone helpwith this?
thanks, 2word

I'd say that was excessive !! Things should start melting !!! Sure you used the right setting on your meter?

What kind of meter are you using to measure starter current? :-staun

I've heard they can surge to 600 amps but you don't normally measure the starter current on a car amp gauge.

Yes, this would be the surge load of ~450 amps. I'll have to check the continous amp load. The reading is taken with an inductive pickup amp meter. thanks for making me think what I'm reading amps wise.
