Question whats the worst that can happen?

so i've been haveing fuel problems lately. i don't have the money to replace the carb, or rebuild it right now, i do plan on it soon. but for now.... it seems that after a while of driving the truck, 10 miles or so, it wants to load up and blow black smoke and shake around and barely move. i recently did a tune up hoping that it would stop it but it didn't. my question is what would happen if i unplugged the choke? would i still be able to drive it? or not. i only drive the thing to and from work. so its not a big deal if it doesn't run 100%. trust me if you saw it, you'd be in wonder of how it does run. lol. its a 1985 f150, 2wd, 4 speed. stock as stock can be, except for the high performance custom gay *** camo paint that someone thought was cool 10 years ago, and the custom buick wheels. yes, buick. anyway, any imput on this would be greatly appreciated. thanks guys.

black smoke means its really rich. blue smoke is burning oil. if its burning black then your carb is all screwy, which apparently is a common issue for the 85s, which have feedback carbs, IIRC. the common solution to this problem is throwing it all in the trash can and putting on the more traditional vacuum advance dizzy and carb from an 80-83. id try and find the setup from a junkyard. theyll usually be dirt cheap from a jy, though the carb will probably be in sorry shape. anyways, id get it taken care of asap because the more you run it like this the more you clog up the works with that black crap. youre in for a helluva seafoaming session once you get it taken care of!

Is the choke closing and causing this? Or is it something else?

You can drive it w/o choke, starting in the cold gets tough.

Did you spray/loosen up etc the choke and linkage? Anything broken or hanging loose?

'85e150 is right...you can drive it without the choke, but it'll be hard to start. My opinion, is that it could be so hard to start that you'll be lucky to get it driving to begin with.

Either way, it's just a band-aid to the problem. Sounds like a stuck float. When you do get the cash together to rebuild the carb, it won't be too bad. You can do it yourself for about 50 bucks - that includes the kit, a gallon can of chem-dip, a couple cans of crab spray, fuel filter, and base\spacer plate gaskets.
