I'm thinking maybe my idle flucuation/shudder/vibration could be connected to the CPS. Having it replaced would confirm whether it was the issue or not. Of coarse I could just put my spare in and come to the same conclusions.
I would just buy the "new and improved" gray one from the dealer and put it in myself. I did this.....and bought a spare for the glovebox just in case! I don't let them touch my truck unless I HAVE TO!
I bought my truck at a blind auction, so i haven't and won't get any recall notice. If i did, i would take it to ford and demand they give me the part, and i'll install it myself. For a $20 part that takes "One shop hour" to install, i'm still not letting those goons touch my truck.
Kris.....you should be getting the letter anyways. Ford is tracking it through MVD....if your truck is registered, they know you own it. I bought mine used and never registered with Ford, but I got my letter just the other day, lots of guys on here got theirs months ago.....I think it just takes them awhile to get to everybody. They didn't touch my truck though!
Thats a good rule to go by. When they replaced our CPS, they broke the threaded section of the housing for the fuel return line off up in the return line. They let us know we had a fuel leak, but didn't bother telling us that they caused it. Without proof, I was stuck with the bill. Needless to say, I fixed it myself. Live and learn.
Same here, I recieved the letter as well.
Too bad the poll didn't have an "undecided" as I already have the grey one installed.
The truck runs ok, but now has a rolling sensation at idle when halfway warmed up like it used to do on synthetic oil. Never did that on the black one, but then I just changed out the injectors at about the same time so I cannot ever know what the real culprit is.
Truck runs GREAT other than that. Gobs of torque. I really want to get out this spring with the trailer and see how it pulls.
I don't feel a need for anything other than stock tune anymore, the truck has more than enough power.

Your rolling idle sensation sounds a lot like the issue I have been chasing. I'd love to find a resolution.
early 99 f350 4x4 cc....had done at dealer as I know the shop foreman...stalled twice in three days then after 250 miles haulin 5kl lb trailer no problems....shop foreman say's no issue's but can't explain why mine did it twice after install....
I love the Ford dealer so long as I don't have to buy a vehicle from him/her or they don't have to work on my truck. Bought the new type CPS before I even picked up my truck; sitting in my glove compartment along with a 10mm wrench. Not a great mechanic, but this board has elevated my talents immeasurably!!!
I did it myself. Too much hassle taking the truck down there and dropping it off and then having to ride to work with Susan and then waiting for a ride back down to the dealer to pick it up after work and then wondering if they re-flashed the PCM while it's there and on and on.
Well when i bought it, it had no history on it, where it came from, etc. I do know it was in the central time zone as the clock was one hour off, and it has lots of rust underneath, typical salt belt truck. Nothing was in the glove box, etc.
Too many stories of guys having troubles with the "new and improved" grey one. I'm gonna go pick up another black one from IH if I can and keep that in the glove box.
I'm thinking I may swap my new gray unit from my glove box with the one currently on the motor. Then go ask to swap the old one with a new one at my local dealer. If they do it then I have two new units in my possesion.
If they don't then I'll atleast know if the CPS fixes my idle shudder or not. If I change them out and nothing changes then I'll throw the old one in the glove box as a spare.
Either way I wind up with two units and know if the CPS is the cause of my issues. If changing the unit fixes my issues then I can alway put the junk one back in and have Ford change it and keep my spare.
