I have a 94 IDI 7.3 turbo, I have been reading everything I can gegt my hands on to learn more about upping the power on the beast. One thing that confuses me is, the turbo, it is a Garrett. Is this the original equipment for this year? and another thing I am not so sure about, is when I pulled off the air filter assembly and spun the turbo rotor with my finger it felt smooth but it did not spin totaly free. Is it supposed to have some restriction? It doesnt feel rough like a bad bearing. The engine has not used any oil between oil changes and it has 210k on it. And for my last inqurey, do you measure exhaust pipe diameter by measuring the OD of the pipe or the ID of the pipe? My truck has a 3inch OD downpipe on it and I didnt think this could be attached to a stock turbo. Any info will help and I really enjoy this web site.
The stock turbo is a garrett its basicly the ATS turbo kit with a differnt out let elbo and down pipe. Does your down pipe look like its been run over by a fork lift where it gose under the cab? IF not you probly already have the ATS outlet and down pipe, they make a kit with a differnt outlet and 3" down pipe.
As for the turbo bearing if you spin it does it spin by its self for a while? Is there any in and out or up and down play?
The down pipe dosent have any dents in it at all, it definatly does get close to the body and back of the engine. The turbo impeller doesnt seem to have any back and forth or up and down play, and it does spin for alittle bit after you flick it but not very long. I used to have a 2000 power stroke and it seemed like the turbo impeller spun for a longer time when you flicked it.
I just ordered a pyrometer and a boost gauge to better understand what is going on. Hopfully this will shed some light on ability of the turbo to produce boost.
i have the same truck, with the same turbo and mine to i have noticed doesn't spin that freely, i think its only a characteristic of that turbo. garret is the stock turbo ford used,
bobrl13,
I replaced my stock air filter with a high flow filter from AFE, about 55 bucks. I also made a "ram" air. You can see pictures in my gallery. These mods were easy and cheap and made a big difference. The boost and pyro are a must have to see whats going on with these lod things. I used a pillar mount for mine and I really love it.
