When I bought my old flareside the owner couldn't find the "key" to the locking lug nuts. Any suggestions on how to get them off now? I don't care if I trash them in the process, I just need to remove them.
I believe its mac that makes a tool kit for getting them off. We had a set at the shop and it works pretty slick. You just slide it over them and they sorta turn onto the lug nuts and spin them right off.
i had one on a bronco spare tire carrier.
vise grips just wouldnt get a grip
used a torch figureing i couldnt hurt anything
messed up the very tip of the stud but i got it off
and replacement lug nut went on after fileing end of stud
didnt hurt the wheel at all
if i had to do again, i would spray it real good with wd40 or liquid wrench,
try vise grips, if that didnt work i would try a chisel in the groove of nut
to try to turn it, then i would use a torch but try to heat the nut up red hot
to see if it softened then try the vice grips while its red hot
good luck
A square socket (actually two squares superimposed @ 45 deg) works well because it has points to grab the lug, but why not just buy the lug remover kit for $9?
I welded an older lugnut on top of the locked one and then torqued it off...since you don't care about it...took like 4 minutes or so...worked like a charm
there are two types of locking lug nuts that i know
one is the old kind that used a key that looks like a gas cap key that removes the outer cover and allows you to use a lug wrench on the smaller inner lug nut
the other kind is a hardened lug nut with what looks like a cloverleaf design with grooves on the end that a matching nut fits in the cloverleaf groove
these are the hard ones to get off
i had forgot about those first ones, they are easy to get off with a drill or punch.
either drill it out or punch it in to jam it up, then it should turn off
i have a torch and thats what i would use just burn it off or like someone said earlier,
weld a nut on top of the lock and turn it off
good luck
