Does anyone have any experience with buying "long blocks" from NAPA or AutoSomething? I am considering buying on to replace my blown 351M. Seems to me I would have $400 or $500 in it if I do it myself and the "crate one is $700 or $800. Just wondering what anyone thought....
Think about converting over to a 400---rods, crank , and ohio flatops(9:1)about 175 from dynagear-(214-631-4677)---you can get a mild cam and lifters(Crane)-- from summitt for 77 , double row timing chain ,hardened pushrods , actually you should pickup the all the recommended componemts that crane recommends for the cam-----the cam part #is 133042---this is amild cam with anoticable idle that gives excellent performance in my truck---have your heads worked at the machine shop and consider having hardened valve seats and stainless valves installed along with a hivolume oil pump---ms6d box and their mds dist..---your on your way to abt 350 hp conseratively if everything is done right and the engine will still run on pump gas!!!fd :-X11
Thanks Fat Daddy, I assume I am to do all the "internal work" myself...Its not that I can't I'm just a little chicken about it lol.
I would be afraid to use my existing block....I haven't opened the top end of it yet but I dug out pieces of camshafts and pistons out of the oil pan when it blew . I can get a motor from a local junk yard for about $150 to $250.
Sigh, I suppose I will just have to learn to do it. The main bearings are my only concern...I have never used that plastic stuff to check tolerances.
Just get a 400 long block instead of a 351M long block. Problem solved -- no messing around with engine internals.
A couple years ago, a friend of mine got a reman 400 long block from the local Ford dealer. Rebuilders are members of Ford's FAR (Ford Authorized Remanufacturer) program, and all parts are covered by warranty from Ford itself. The engine came with a 24-month/24K mile warranty backed by Ford. I think he paid about $1200 or so.
Seems like a killer deal to me, considering you'd pay that much or more for a long block with just a 90-day warranty from some outfit that has more lawyers than competent automotive technicians.
