I look under the truck the other day and find that the seal that mates the rear axle with the drive shaft is leaking some fluid. This a big job to get done........should I have a shop do the work and also, what do you think it will cost to have that seal done? Thanks for any and all responses. I am having no other issues other than that leak so far.
You know I'm suffering from old timers disease, but I do not think changing the pinion seal is all that big of a deal. An impact wrench should make it fairly simple. I'm trying to remember this from my drag racing days, but I do not think just pulling the yoke and replacing the seal involves any of the geometry of the ring and pinion setting. Please feel to correct me if I'm wrong, won't hurt my feelings.

not even a big deal with hand tools,a pipe wrench hold the yoke good then just a socket and breaker bar and what ever you like to pop the seal out and a bammer to reinstall

Good deal! My old timers disease is not as far advanced as I've been afraid of.
not a biggy at all, corse I'm acustome to the bigguns with 2 3/4" socket and 1" drive ratchet
That big a nut huh? It might be better to get some new goodies(tools) than to pay the $160 I got quoted for doing the job......at the stealership. There a link showing this fix? I did take out the side plug on the rear axle.........I think that it was the lowest one and a very little of the oil came out(tablespoon or so).....so I guess it isn't loosing a lot of fluid at this point. Thanks for the help.
I think Ray was referring to bigger rigs than ours with that size of a nut he mentioned. Just the quote from the stealership should tell you how easy of a job it is. You can hardly pull into their service bay for that price let alone get some work done.

how may plugs do you have
if you were checking the fill plug and some run out it's not leaking much
how much oil is around the seal is it dripping or just a little oily

It is just a little oily..............nah, no drips. I was pretty sure that I was on a level surface too...........I didn't bother to stick my finger in it to see how high it was, but it must be pretty high..........one little stream of fluid coming out. Oh yeah, is it common to get a little bit of metal shavings on the inner side of that plug?
it is normal to have some fine shavings, may not be a bad idea to change the fluid if you don't know when it was last changed
for your leak check breather to make sure it's no clogged
check for any looseness in pinion bearing
it is not uncommon for a seal to weep a little, mine has leaked a littlefor over five years and have to add a few ounces every six months not enough to bother with replacing theseal
