I have a 79 F150 4x4. and I just got done installing a 4" superlift kit. I bought skyjacker shocks and when I bolted them to my 9" the shock bodies hit the axle and they wouldnt swing up enough to bolt to the bracket on the frame. Help me!! i dont know what to do about that, unlesss you have to move the bracket on the frame.
This is a common problem when usiing aftermarket shocks. Some cut away the portion of the bracket that contacts the larger diameter shock body, while others cut the factory mount and rotate it to allow the body to clear the bracket.
The super easy solution is to run the shock inverted. Be aware that not all shocks can be run this direction. You will need to have a pressurized shock that is of the cellular gas type. This will prevent the nitrogen and the oil to mix, preventing the shock from working properly.
Not sure what you are refering to when you mention that the shock will not swing up enough. Are they too short? If this is the case, you have to simply replace the shock. If it is just a matter of the shock body being too large, then you have a few options. Either replace the lower mount location or verify it the shock can be run inverted.
I had the same problem with my Skyjacker Nitro shocks with my F-250, I ended up lightly smashing the shock body where it contacts the axle tube for clearance, I have had these on the truck for 15,000 miles now and have had no problems. As far as I know, this is just the outer tube and is a reservoir for the shock oil so the shock will still operate to full stroke just fine. It still sucks smashing brand new shocks, I know. Your other option is cut off the shock mount and reweld it where the shock will not contact the axle tube.
