I need to change my 2 piece rear main. Currently, the flywheel/trans/clutch is off the engine, and the engine is support by the oil pan. Would it be worth the effort to find a way to support the engine with the oil pan off to change the rear main seal while everything off the engine? I was going to wait until I put the trans back on so it could support the engine because the Chilton's book says you don't need the trans off, and I was going to use the trans to support the engine.
Will it be easier to change it with everything off though, or does it not really matter?
Is it really necessary to drop the crankshaft by the slight amount that the Chilton book says? Doing so will make the task much more difficult, and I don't like the idea of loosing a perfectly good crankshaft.
I've never did a seal while the motor was still in the truck, but I would think yes it is necessary.
There is quite a bit of drag on the seal, and even if you could get the old one out without dropping the crank slightly I doubt that you could get a new one in without nicking the journal while it's still torqued up.
