Brought home an '06 Exped. First thing I noticed was how much smoother the tranny is over the 1998 I owned previously. It is hard to believe this is still a four speed OD transmission. It felt like a five speed. Does the 2006 have a different tranny then the 1998?.
Does anybody know anything about the tanny in the 2006 Expedition mated to the 5.4 liter v8? Is it the same transmission that went into the 1998 Expedition?
There seems to be an appreciable difference in the two model years and I would like to know why? Perhaps the 1998 just was not working well. I do not know much about automatics and have owned only three vehicles in forty years equipped as such. So, any info is appreciated.
Your 98 expedition used the horrid 4r100 automatic if it was built late 98, or the old E40D used by Bronco's and the like if it was early 98. Your 2006 (all Expy's 03 and on with the 5.4 got it) use the 4r75w tranny, an upgraded, more durable, smoother shifting, revamped brother of the 4r70w.

Hope that helps.
Man, you know it! That old tranny was the worst experience. Every tap of the throttle meant a lerch into 3rd or even 2nd. Nothing like going 60MPH on a grade and kicking down to 2nd gear! Crunch crunch.
This newer one is so smooth I thought it might be a five speed as the "ratios" seem so close and the down shifting is almost effortless.
